Rule van der Merwe

Hi, I'm Rule van der Merwe. I'm in my second year of BSc Laser Physics at Stellenbosch University, and I tutor Afrikaans FAL, Information Technology, Mathematics and Physical Sciences for Grades 1 to 12.

Growing up around my family's pre-primary and primary schools naturally pulled me toward working with children, and I've seen how much the right encouragement can change how a student sees their own ability. In matric at Die Hoerskool Menlopark I took 9 subjects and got 8 distinctions with an 88% average, while staying involved in leadership, mentoring and sport, which taught me how to balance hard work with patience.

I've tutored a Grade 5 learner with level one autism and severe ADHD, helping her go from 20% to a confident pass in both Mathematics and Afrikaans through personalised strategies. At Caligro Tots Academy and Caligro Private Primary I regularly stood in as a teacher for Grades 1 to 7, teaching Mathematics, English, Afrikaans and History. I've also informally helped classmates and younger students with revision, study skills and exam prep.

Outside of tutoring I'm into music, dancing, playing guitar and cooking for my friends, and I'm a bit obsessed with organising things, so expect lessons that are structured but not stiff.
